Depression Cooking with Clara has a new website

Great Depression Cooking with 93 year old Clara has gone from occasional video to YouTube channel to copyrighted material to her own website. Nice to see the growth. Her latest video is "Depression Breakfast" and Clara is just as charming as ever.

Wife Swap Long-Fowler family

Oh, boy is the 'net howling today after that disastrous pairing of Stephen Fowler and Gayla Long in ABC's Wife Swap. Stephen Fowler's insistence that his education, accent, and standing in the world gives him license to demean and abuse the woman from Missouri was shameful. I believe it was unnecessary for ABC to continue with that pairing, since he refused to participate in the Rules, and reneged on his obligations to participate fully in the show. He kicked Gayla out and she wound up in a hotel room, for heavens' sakes. What does it take for ABC to decide to end something? They canceled Boston Legal quick enough. But they didn't release Gayla Long from her abuse inside that house of horrors with Stephen Fowler. What a long and lonely night in the hotel room that must have been for her.

Mr Fowler had called her names, insulted her for the fun of it, (and in the so doing insulted all his wife's clients), taught his kids to do the same which to me, is child abuse, and refused to participate in the obligations of the show on the basis that he was above her and her ideas were beneath him.

That is not how we treat people. That is not how we fulfill our business obligations. Why ABC continued subjecting Gayla to the classless boor is beyond me.

Now. Taking a breath. My family was blessed enough to have money and emphasized education, world views and culture to the same extent that Stephen Fowler did. However, they also taught me to be thankful for the material comfort we had, to listen to other points of view, and never ever think myself above another person. Certainly they set the example that you are courteous to all people in public and treat them respectfully. I do not know why or how Mr Fowler ended up so heartless, but to showcase that level of meanness on a national television show was just too crass for words, especially since Mrs. Long was such a classy person and stayed true to Christian values in the face of hard, deep, and constant abuse on national television no less.

ABC: do not let your show participants be abused for the sake of ratings. I enjoy Wife Swap for the sake of seeing how others cope when living outside their element and seeing what they could and do learn, but abuse should never be part of the mix.

So that is my rant. This is another person's rant and they said it much better than I could:
Wow. At present, I am two-thirds of the way into this evening's episode of Wife Swap. I am so aghast at the actions of Steven Fowler that I had to write in. I actually took the time to grab my laptop, power it up and sign up for an account on ABC.com, merely in hopes of Mr. Fowler reading this message. So Mr. Fowler- You should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. Before you label me with one of your stereotypes and dismiss me as some wannabe Internet opinionist, let me give you my background. I was educated at Le Rosey through my A -levels, did my undergrad at Harvard and my post-grad at Columbia.

While I am proud of my education, it does not define who I am, nor do I deem it as a measure of my self-worth, in any way. Education is a wonderful thing and the fact that you place such emphasis on it is admirable. The fact that you use it to judge others and to assume some kind of superiority over them is pathetic. As an educated person I would hope that you would be beyond acting in such a callous and classless manner - this is clearly not the case. You were immensely rude and obnoxious to the other family and should be ashamed of yourself. Absolutely ashamed.

What's even more pathetic is how you continually spewed academic euphemism, sesquipedalianism or some polysyllabic bit of arcane jargon just to make the wife from the other family feel beneath you (see how it comes off?). With the grace of god and a bit of luck, I have been extremely successful and I would never, ever try to intentionally make someone feel like they are beneath me. That is sadistic and beyond reprehensible. I don't judge people to begin with; I do, however, look to their heart and actions in drawing my conclusions about them - not their education (or lack of it) or wallet. I learn from different people EVERY DAY - rich, poor, educated or not. I just try to be a good human being.

The priorities you preach to be important (education, environmentalism, etc.) are indeed so; however these are all tools for self-improvement. It seems you would rather use them in the context of measuring your own self-worth or more disgustingly the lack of worth in others. I usually attribute some of the characterizations I see on reality shows to editing, but not in your case. You just came off as an incredibly small-minded, petulant, narcissistic jerk. I hope you watch yourself on camera and are able to learn from it. Class is an intrinsic quality; it is not mutually exclusive to wealth or education. You, sir, proved that this evening. I hope, for the sake of your children, that you grow from this experience.

I know where Birmingham UK's apostrophes went

"Birmingham City Council has dropped possessive apostrophes from its road and street signs altogether - so St Paul's Square becomes St Pauls, for example. The decision follows years of debate about whether apostrophes should be restored to local place names such as Kings Norton, Acocks Green and Druids Heath. John Richards, founder of the Apostrophe Protection Society, said the decision was 'absolute defeatism.'"

The Apostrophe Protection Society?

After my shock at learning there is such a club, I immediately decided that we need one here in the US. I see things like this all the time.

It drives me bananas!!!!!!! Absolutely bonkers. So the UK got rid of their apostrophes and they all immigrated here, gleefully attaching to any letter s without concern for whether it is their punctuation turn or not. Attack of the Apostrophes!

Not for the foodie faint-hearted

Two pounds of bacon wrapped around two pounds of sausage drenched in BBQ sauce. A recipe sweeping the internet, called "Bacon Explosion." LOL! Honest, it is "the most popular recipe on the web." How about a dressing made of mayonnaise drenched in lard with a topping of butter while we're at it.

I confess, Bacon Explosion does sound good. Speaking of bacon, don't forget the ever-popular Bacon Of The Month Club.

Now go eat some bacon and watch some Super Bowl! That's an order, soldier!

Everything is never as it seems

I posted here about a guy who drove off a ledge and hundreds of feet down got hung up on a rock outcropping, and miraculously was saved. Seeing the photo, I was moved to say that this was one of the reasons I believe in God.

Turns out he is an alleged child molester who tried to kill himself.

I still believe that God's hand is in this. I just switch from thinking I know why God did something (always dangerous) to once again, realizing that God moves in mysterious ways.

La di da, it's almost spring

My yard is big and it has a lot of old birdhouses hanging around. I snapped this about ten days ago but the lawn and yard has popped a lot since then with new growth and precursors to spring. I even saw a dandelion next to my doorstep this week!

I watched Annie Hall again last night on Turner Classic Movies. What a funny film that is. It holds up today. My favorite scene of all was the one when Alvy and Annie were standing on line for the movies. Apparently this is the bane of New Yorkers, the lengthy wait to get into any good film is a standard annoyance they expect and put up with. Also annoying is having to listen to blowhards behind you in line pontificating on subjects of which they know nothing. Alvy (Woody Allen) puts up with a guy loudly pontificating for as long as he can and then Alvy breaks into the conversation to tell the guy that he knows nothing about Marshall McLuhan's poetry. The guys retorts that he teaches poetry and literature at Columbia, so Alvy should just shut up. Just then, Alvy brings out McLuhan from behind a movie poster to settle the argument. McLuhan immediately confirms Alvy's pronouncement. "I heard what you were saying. You - you know nothing of my work. How you ever got to teach a course in anything is totally amazing." I laughed so hard I almost missed Allen's next line. Looking directly into the camera, he says, "If only life were like this!"

N. Korea: "All bets are off!"

I posted this on The End Time blog last night. I am still amazed that mainstream news outlets in the US have not picked this up yet. At last the BBC has published an article by now:

North Korea tears up agreements
"Communist North Korea has said it is scrapping all military and political agreements signed with the South, accusing Seoul of hostile intent."

So North Korea says 'all bets are off.' Remember, N. Korea's nukes are in the hands of a crazy dictator. Now, nothing happens in a vacuum, and on January 18th "South Korea said its military forces remained on alert Sunday a day after North Korea issued a statement pledging "an all-out confrontational posture."

I just wonder about the timing. Were they waiting for hard liner Bush to be out and talk 'em kiss kiss Obama is in?

Anyway, The End Time has a short list of why this is bad and scripture to ponder.

Another escape, this one from death

The driver survived, was extricated and flown to a hospital.

This is one of the reasons I believe in God.

Worst escape attempt ever

Thirty seconds of watching the shallow end of the gene pool

Wednesday night church kids

I teach bible to first and second graders on Wednesday nights. The kids are 6-8 years old. Wed. night I read them the story of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10:30-35. I read with great fervor and passion.

"Jesus replied and said, 'A man was going down toe road from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side of the road. But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.' "

So at the end of the story, I looked around and asked, "Boys and girls, what do you think is the moral of the story?"

Boy: "Never go walking alone and always bring a BB gun."

SatNews:

Chaitén's Caldera Chugging Chunks Continuously

Chile’s Chaitén Volcano had been dormant for more than 9,000 years when it erupted in May 2008. In the months that followed, the volcano remained active, releasing plumes of steam and volcanic ash, coating local vegetation, clogging waterways, and inundating the nearby town of the same name.

Two versions of the image appear here: a close-up view of the caldera (top) and a view of the surrounding area (bottom). These false-color images include visible and infrared light. Vegetation is red, bare (possibly ash-covered) ground is brown, and water is deep blue. The plume from the volcano appears off-white, and it is thick enough to completely hide the land surface below.

"Google is to launch a service that would enable users to access their personal computer from any internet connection, according to industry reports. But campaigners warn that it would give the online behemoth unprecedented control over individuals' personal data."

"The Google Drive, or "GDrive", could kill off the desktop computer, which relies on a powerful hard drive. Instead a user's personal files and operating system could be stored on Google's own servers and accessed via the internet."

I'm stoked!

Today is 68 degrees out there, sunny, and the birds are back! I even spotted an eager dandelion popping its head above the grassline.

It certainly can and probably will get cold again before it turns warm for good, but this is what I love about the difference between Maine and Georgia: Maine winters are relentless. It gets cold and it stays cold. But in Georgia, it does get cold (though usually not bitterly so) but occasionally you get a day or two like this one. And your heart dreams of summer and you hear the birds sing and you know it won't be long now!

Boastfully humble or humbly boastful?

July 2008: Obama's prayer at Jerusalem Western Wall:

"Lord – Protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of your will."

January 2009:
Doris Kearns Goodwin told the audience Obama said to her in 2007 he’s not getting the presidency to be Millard Fillmore, but to be great like Lincoln.

In the end of days, "People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, "
2TI 3:2

January 23, 2009:
Obama left no doubt about who's in charge of these negotiations. "I won," Obama noted matter-of-factly, according to sources familiar with the conversation.

Boast no more so very proudly, Do not let arrogance come out of your mouth; For the LORD is a God of knowledge, And with Him actions are weighed. 1 Samuel 2:3

"In 1621, Robert Burton wrote in his The Anatomy of Melancholy, "They are proud in humility; proud in that they are not proud." How carnal men are to twist virtue into sin! It is enough to make us suspicious when we come across a "humble" person."

"We have undoubtedly crossed paths with those who were so proud that they oozed with false humility. Many religious leaders in the world today openly appear this way, as they wax eloquent on their televised evangelical programs. Authors have written dozens of books and Hollywood has produced many movies to expose the hypocrisy of such individuals."

"Uncountable numbers of both religious and secular leaders have risen to power on the banner of humility. Feigning an image of heartfelt concern for those who can help place them in the limelight, they glow with an air of counterfeit humility. Eventually, this hypocritical image always becomes apparent, just as our sins expose us in due time (Numbers 32:23). The sin of pride is no different."

"Of the many things that people have written on humility, as much as one-third refers to false humility. For instance, the French moralist La Rochefoucald wrote in Maxims in 1665: "Humility is often only feigned submission which people use to render others submissive. It is a subterfuge of pride which lowers itself in order to rise."

Boast only in the cross! Obama may be boasting "I won" but he has really lost, because he "has his reward already. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven...for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." And now we know where Obama's treasure is.

Despair and Destruction

For those of you who see clearly, who refuse to participate in today's festivities and prefer to mourn the loss of our country. For those of you who are not deluded, nor bamboozled by a man who, light as air and substantial as a bubble, has promised "change" and that alone has not buoyed you to giddiness, but instead has made you rightly suspicious, I offer the following information:

Aaron Russo's documentary Freedom to Fascism. A tremendous and factual journey through the decline of America. Once you see this you will understand that after today, we will have become a Fascist nation.

And this: Dmitry Orlov's essay on Socialism v. Fascism. A clearly written description of exactly what Fascism is, and why we are there.

That Bastion of American Socialism

"Over the past few months the American mainstream chatter has experienced a sudden spike in the gratuitous use of the term "Socialist." It was prompted by the attempts of the federal government to resuscitate insolvent financial institutions. These attempts included offers of guarantees to their clients, injections of large sums of borrowed public money, and granting them access to almost-free credit that was magically summoned ex nihilo by the Federal Reserve..."

more at the link

For those who are about to mourn, I salute you. Keep the faith, and remember, there is only one man who can 'save the world', who can bring everlasting 'hope' and that man is not Barack Hussein Obama. It is Jesus. Put your faith in Him and His control, and all will be well. Today will recede from your mind and if you know Jesus, you will truly know change, not temporary bailout change, but true soul change from the inside.

Even ABC News says TOO EXPENSIVE

Obama is a hypocrite. His hype: "With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces," Obama said.

His reality: "The country is in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, which isn't stopping rich donors and the government from spending $170 million, or more, on the inauguration of Barack Obama."

His hype: "It must be a priority of American foreign policy to commit to eliminating extreme poverty and ensuring every child has food, shelter, and clean drinking water. As we strive to rebuild America's standing in the world, this important bill will demonstrate our promise and commitment to those in the developing world."

His reality: "They are not the $20 and $50 donors who helped propel Obama through Election Day," said Massie Ritsch, communications director for the Center for Responsive Politics. "These are people giving mostly $50,000 apiece. They tend to be corporate executives, celebrities, the elite of the elite."

His hype: "It matters little if you have the right to sit at the front of the bus if you can’t afford the bus fare; it matters little if you have the right to sit at the lunch counter if you can’t afford the lunch."

His reality: Obama's Inauguration has been financed partially by bailed-out Wall Street Executives

37.3 million Americans were living in poverty in 2007 and that number is much higher now. The country lost 21,000 jobs in one day. "Among the inaugural expenses: a Bruce Springsteen concert, the parade, large-screen TV rentals for all-free viewing on the national Mall, $700,000 to the Smithsonian Institution to stay open and, of course, the balls, including three that are being pitched as free or low cost for the public.

Meanwhile, back at the reality ranch, How much rice does it take to feed a person for a day?
In countries where rice is a staple part of the diet, WFP provides, on average, about 400 grams of rice per person, per day. That is intended for two meals that include other ingredients to ensure a minimum of 2,100 kilocalories per day. There are about 48 grains of rice in a gram. How many grams of rice would 165 million inaugural dollars buy? A LOT.

As the 'elite of the elite' dance the night away, and the bills for this expensive party come rolling in, think about how many grains of rice that party money could buy. Think about a president who ran on a platform of vowing to eradicate the tragedy of world poverty, yet is happily throwing the biggest and most expensive inaugural party of all time.

Daily Doom: King Obama? Israel gets gas, bring out yer dead

Happy Martin Luther King day! Do you think Rev King would be proud of a black man taking the Presidential oath of office tomorrow? I think so. Congratulations to all who participated in the election and to all who are happy their man won. He is not my man but God is in charge, setting up kings and governments. His will be done, for the greater good and ultimate victory.

Luke 21:11a (NASB) and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines...

There's no plague like the original plague: but the source, The UK Sun, and the writing, leaves me suspicious as to whether this article is true. Read it with a grain of salt:

Black Death 'kills al-Qaeda operatives in Algeria'
The disease, which struck Europe in the Middle Ages killing more than 25 million people, has swept through a training camp for insurgents in Algeria. The arrival of the plague was discovered when security forces found the body of a dead terrorist by a roadside. [we are talking bubonic plague here!!!]

This one, unfortunately, is real:
Fears of Bubonic Plague grow as city alleys pile up with rubbish
For many months the Municipalities in Zimbabwe have simply been unable to cope with the removal of rubbish. Great piles of trash, rotting vegetables, putrid entrails, piles of waste paper, have been seen growing in alleys and sanitary lanes. With the ever-increasing deterioration in the public service sector in the country resulting in the vast piles of trash and sewage building up in the cities, the next thing to fear, experts say, is Bubonic Plague.

Cholera Kills 2,225 in Zimbabwe, Infects 42,600
In Geneva, the United Nations said the cholera death toll in Zimbabwe since August reached 2,225 on Friday, with 42,675 others infected and 1,550 new cases being reported every day.

Famine-Struck Kenya Appeals For Urgent Foreign Food Aid
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Friday declared the current food shortage facing the African country a national disaster and launched an appeal for $400 million in foreign food aid. "My government has with effect from today, declared the famine situation in the country a national disaster," Kibaki declared in a speech delivered in Nairobi.

I hope we are in agreement that the only 'man' to save the world is Jesus. That said, 2Tim 4:3 reminds us: For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

President 'has four years to save Earth'
Barack Obama has only four years to save the world. That is the stark assessment of Nasa scientist and leading climate expert Jim Hansen who last week warned only urgent action by the new president could halt the devastating climate change that now threatens Earth. Crucially, that action will have to be taken within Obama's first administration, he added.

The man who will change the world
In Britain, as our poll today suggests, fully three-quarters of the population say they are "confident that Barack Obama will live up to the expectations people have that he will be a force for good in the world".

Can Democrat President-elect Barack Obama save the US?

and so on. For heavens' sakes, this is pretty sickening, if you ask me.

Speaking of Kings, did you know that Democrat Representative Jose Serrano (NY) is pushing for a repeal of the Constitutional amendment that prohibits a President from serving more than 2 terms? Get ready to say "All hail Obama the President for Life!" I am not kidding. Here is the bill, introduced on Jan 16.

Prophecy in real life:

Friends, this weeks' news that Turkey (Gomer in prophecy) has turned toward Russia and away from NATO sets my prophetic drums a-beating, but it should not surprise students of Ezekiel's Gog-Magog war prophecy in ch 37 & 38. In that war, an alliance of nations come against Israel in search of her new-found "spoils and riches," Turkey among them. In addition, since January 1st Russia's use of natural gas to browbeat the Ukraine and demonstrate prowess to the EU should also not surprise anyone who understands that Gog is to become belligerent once again at the end time.

And food for thought: the prophecy says that Israel will be dwelling securely in her land at the time of the Gog-Magog war...is this cease fire with Hamas over the Gaza strip one that will be deep and lasting enough will allow Israel to relax and feel secure?

Finally, just at the time when Russia is using natural gas as a political weapon and causing a row on the Baltic and the EU because of it, ISRAEL DISCOVERS NATURAL GAS. A hugely rich deposit that geologists estimate will allow Israel to be economically independent for decades to come. Are these the riches and spoils that will cause belligerent Russia-Gog to come after Israel?

We will see. It is too soon to tell if the peace with Hamas will hold, and too soon to see how Russia, once the only dominant energy rich country on that side of the pond, will react to Israel's energy discovery. But watch! For we know the bible is true, we know we are in the end of days, and we know things will happen the way the bible says they will happen. The only variable we do not know regarding Gog-Magog is, if that time is now/soon. So we watch, wait, and pray. And witness!

I've fallen in love...with reality tv!

I have not been a huge tv watcher most of my life, just getting into it in the last few years. I like family programs, that is, shows depicting nice families. Little House on the Prairie and the Waltons reruns are tops.

I've written before about Touched by an Angel, and CSI Miami (CSI is getting too gory for me now.) Andy Griffith is great (but not Matlock). Anyway, I usually multi-task when I watch tv because I hate commercials. So I read, or type on my laptop or do the dishes or play with the cats, or all those at once. The best tv shows are ones where I can tune in and out and not think much or follow a storyline. In comes reality tv.

I said before that I enjoy the Home TV design shows. Decorating rooms is always fun, especially when it's other people's money. But this week all at once I watched Supernanny, Wife Swap and Top Chef. I learned these hav all been on for a few years now. In Supernany, a British nanny observes an American family in trouble and then tells them what they need to do to get control of the kids again. Wife Swap takes two wives holding diametrically opposed views (frugal vs. spendthrift) and plops them into each others' families for two weeks. And Top Chef is a bunch of cooking prima donnas vying to cook their way to top recognition.

Maybe it's because I enjoy watching real people more than fake ones, and no matter how hard a sitcom tries to look real, it never is. Viewing The Cosby Show reruns after all these years proves that. But seeing a real family really struggle with kids, now that I can get into. And though the chefs cook things I would never cook, the chefs' foibles and hopes are all to vulnerably apparent, which is another thing I can relate to.

The episode where the chefs were forced to use processed foods was hilarious, and the most interesting. It was only a short clip, a "Quickfire Challenge" in which they were unleashed into a regular person's pantry to make something tasty in only 15 minutes. The chefs sniffed and disparaged and hoity toitied their noses in the air. "Spam" they cried. "Velveeta!" they pouted. Where are the capers in Bearnaise sauce? I laughed and said to the tv, "Now you know how every mom in America has to cook!" By looking at a pantry knowing you only have a few minutes before the soccer game or the piano lesson...muttering, 'what can I make with Spam?' Actually that was the best dish, a chef made a soup out of Spam and crunch things you put on top of Asian rice dishes, but it went by too fast for me to catch the ingredients and they are not posted online. Figures, the ONE meal that a regular person would eat, they hide the recipe.

Oh well. As I grow older my tastes are changing. I read non-fiction mostly now. It's not a surprise that my viewing habits are also changing to match my reading habits. Real stuff. (as 'real' as television can be anyway, with cunning editing for better drama).

On march Supernanny, Wives who Swap, and Chefs! On Designers and House Hunters and Flippers and Cleaner uppers! You go Man vs. Wild and Survivorman! Stay safe Crab fishermen and Ice Road truckers. I have finally caught up. Reality tv is the best.

Do you think Obama will live up to the hope? Or is it just hype?

Let the Hope and Change begin! Party like it's 1933!

AP: Obama hosting pricey party in a dicey economy "Unemployment is up. The stock market is down. Let's party."

"The price tag for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration gala is expected to break records, with some estimates reaching as high as $150 million. Despite the bleak economy, however, Democrats who called on President George W. Bush to be frugal four years ago are issuing no such demands now that an inaugural weekend of rock concerts and star-studded parties has begun."

Where are all the tsk-tskers now? Michelle Malkin writes about "The Left's protests in late 2004 before the Bush inaugural. He was bashed for continuing the American tradition in a time of war and for holding parties so soon after the southeast Asian tsunami disaster."

Remember?

"Critics are calling on U.S. President George W Bush to scale back the glittering multimillion dollar parties planned this week in honor of his second-term inauguration, saying lavish festivities are unseemly at a time of war. Bush is to be sworn in Thursday and feted with four days of pomp and party-going at a price tag of about $40 million. But critics insist that with U.S. troops dying daily in Iraq, the tone surrounding this year’s inaugural celebration should be more modest."

But that was the goose. This is The Gander.

Michelle Malkin: "The Obamafest on Jan. 20 will be the most expensive inauguration in American history. President Barack Obama’s inauguration next week is set to be the most expensive ever, predicted to reach over $150m (£102m). This dwarfs the $42.3m spent on George Bush’s inauguration in 2005 and the $33m spent on Bill Clinton’s in 1993."

"Carole Florman, spokeswoman for the joint congressional committee on inaugural ceremonies, told the New York Daily News, which estimated the cost at $160m: “We’re always very budget conscious. But we’re sending a message to the entire world about our peaceful transition of power, and you don’t want it to look like a schlock affair. It needs to be appropriate to the magnitude of events that it is.“

Awww. Of course. Now I get it. Despite economic collapse, rampant unemployment, failure of world trade, countries and states going bankrupt, bailouts, and bank runs, Obama's Inaugural should be WAY more magnitudinous than the previous 44. He's The [only] One that counts!

Live video of the US Air crash!

If this doesn't bring tears to your eyes...The Hudson River Vessel Traffic Service released its webcam video of the US Air flight 1549 crash into the Hudson River. The plan splashes down at the 2:00 mark, on the extreme left of the scene. At that point the cam operator notices the event and zooms in. Right away you can see people sliding out the chutes and standing on the wings. Efficient evacuation! What brought tears to my eyes were:

--literally three minutes after the crash the first ferry boat arrives and immediately begins rescue of those standing on the right wing. Look at the time on the vid. Three minutes
--five minutes into the scene you can clearly see the folks on the left wing waiting like statues, while those on the right wing are almost all picked up by that first arriving ferry. Two additional boats arrive momentarily and the left wing people rescue commences.
--all the while the plane is sinking. Demonstrably and inexorably...sinking.

PRAISE GOD for the miracle this is.

Just for fun!

Wow this is interesting. from The Newseum site, all you have to do is put your mouse over a city on the map and that city's front page will pop up and you can read the headlines. Cool.

Have you heard? Fish isn't to be called fish any more. PETA says they're sea kittens. "New PETA campaign to rename fish 'sea kittens': In attempt to pressure consumers with guilt, the group wants fish to be rebranded as "sea kittens."

According to "Sea Kitten Facts" on its Web site, fish feel pain and affection, they enjoy being petted and they communicate with one another. "Who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?" [I would]

Sigh. Sea kittens. OK, but what will the sea monkeys think?

Got a frog in your throat? The Georgia Department of Natural Resources needs your help. Wildlife biologists need volunteers for the annual statewide calling frog survey, which starts Jan. 15. He said the volunteers are needed to help decipher the calls of Georgia’s 31 frog species. The state is setting up baseline data on frogs so scientists can identify population trends. Before they are assigned to one of the preset listening routes, volunteers have to pass an online test of their ability to audibly identify frog species." It's ribbeting work.

Yellowstone: "No large eq imminent. But be ready anyway'

Quake update: Geologists of Jackson Hole: 'Just be prudent'

Geologists of Jackson Hole issue press release on Alpine quake yesterday. Not the implied concern that this latest eq occurred in a 'seismic gap' where eqs hardly ever occur...and this gap is at the top of the line from Yellowstone...

Jackson Hole, Wyoming - Local geologists, Wally Ulrich, John Willott and Peter Ward issued the following press release:

"An earthquake was felt at 9:15 pm on Thursday, January 15th in Jackson, Alpine, Etna and Thayne, Wyoming, and Idaho Falls, Idaho. According to the US Geological Survey, it was a magnitude 4.0 event located just north of Alpine Junction at a depth of 3 miles."

"This earthquake occurred at the south end of the extended Teton Fault zone along the eastern base of the Teton Mountain Range. Geologists call this area the “Seismic Gap” because of the lack of recorded earthquakes—a linear area along the large Teton Fault, which is unusually seismically quiet. The recent swarm of hundreds of earthquakes in Yellowstone National Park lie near the northern end of this “seismic gap.”

"This seemingly quiet seismic zone centered along the Teton Fault has been the site of magnitude 7. plus earthquakes in pre-historic times. The Faults have created the Grand Teton Mountains and shaped western Wyoming. Another magnitude 7. plus earthquake will fill this gap sometime within the next several hundred years. Some earthquakes are preceded by a perceptible increase in seismicity at one or both ends of the “seismic gap”. There is currently no reliable way to know in advance which small earthquakes are foreshocks to large earthquakes. There is no scientific basis to predict that a large earthquake is imminent."

"But this is a reminder to dust off your earthquake response plans..."

more info at the headline.

UPDATE: Another article came out today: a good article that explains a bit more. Including that this earthquake is "a real concern" to geologists. "Earthquake shakes region" from Jackson Hole Daily.

Something you don't see in Georgia very often

My very own twin icicles, hanging from the threshold of my front door. It was 13 degrees here today, and the high was only 34. Usually the low is 34. Temps in the teens are very cold for here.

Heartbreak of the day

Subbing in a kindergarten today was nice. At one point, a teacher came in and got a bunch of kids to work in small groups outside the room, and the remaining kids were playing at centers. The kids were so cute, playing together nicely. One trio of boys was at the trains, another pair of boys at the Legos, more boys at the erector set, a group of girls at the blocks. The girls played happily for a long time, chatting and making gardens and flowers with their colored blocks.

Suddenly one girl stopped. She looked up at me almost in a panic, her face turning white. One barrette had slipped, and her oversized sweater was hanging down below her knees.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes and said: "I'm hungry."
"Come here sweetie, tell me what you had for breakfast."
"Gum and nothing else."
Pause
"What was that again?"
"Gum and nothing else."

I took her over and gave her a baggie of goldfish from the teacher's closet.
A few minutes later, she smiled and said "My tummy's full!" And she went back to the blocks.

It was the gum that got me.

What a pilot! What a Flight Crew! What a miracle, praise the Lord!

All survived.

"For the first time in 50 years of commercial jet flight, the pilots of US Airways Flight 1549 successfully executed one of the most technically challenging maneuvers, landing a jetliner on water without fatalities." "Although commercial jetliners are required to be equipped with life vests and inflatable slides for use in an emergency landing on water, it is a seldom-attempted feat. Indeed, even though pilots go through the motions of training to ditch a plane in the water, the generally held belief is that such landings would almost certainly result in fatalities."

A joke about "Change"

In the days of the old French foreign legion, a platoon was out on patrol in the desert of French North Africa for some number of weeks. The mens' uniforms were all filthy and smelling; water was on half rations. Things were bad and morale was crumbling.

Finally, one morning, the commandant announces to the men: "I have good news gentlemen. Today we have a change of uniforms!"

The men were, of course thrilled, and there was a fair bit of celebrating. Until one Legionnaire asked "Where are the uniforms, Commandant?"

"Ah! Francois, you change with Marcel. Marcel, you change with Henrique, Henrique, you change with...."

President Elect Obama ... we will be getting change all right. Or will we?

The woman next door

We pass so many people during the day that we work with, worship with, see on our biking or running routes... but have no idea how their life is going. We don't know their fears, their joys, their wants. We just pass, smile, say hi, how's it goin', and then we are back-to, our cursory response "fines" and "ok's" wafting in the air as we grow farther away from each other down the hall, down the trail, down the highway.

There was a woman in the next door classroom the other day who had never subbed in the county before. I familiarized her with the school's procedures and the kids in the class. At lunchtime she came in and we struck up a conversation. Turns out, she and her nine-year-old son had been living in Houston. She moved to Commerce area to be near family because Hurricane Ike blew the roof of the apartment complex off and they lost their home and all their belongings. "It's hard to start over in this economy," she said, gazing out the window quietly. I can imagine.

She smiled and said that she was looking for any work, any work at all, as long as it is steady. "I have to feed my son," she said.

We just never know what someone is going through. We never know.

LOL, CNN preparing us for doomsday

They are in the Situation Room. They have a whole room for ... situations!

Ticker says: "New Developments: What to do if doomsday strikes"

They are having a Doomsday Drill called Tabletop that prepares for any manner of attack and leadership is wiped out.

All well & good, considering we are inaugurating a new president and the Capitol makes quite a target. But most amusing is the ticker. As if there is ANYTHING a person could do if doomsday strikes! Except accept Jesus as savior, of course.

From Matt over at Peak Oil: Life After the Oil Crash:

"If you've been reading LATOC or any other (reality-based) energy sites, then you are familiar with the concept of energy return on energy invested (EROEI). Once a closed system's EROEI falls below the break even point, the system is no longer viable."

"Well the financial world has something similar to EROEI which is the amount of GDP generated for each dollar of debt injected into the economy. For lack of a better term, I will refer to this as "MROMI". Not unlike the EROEI of U.S. oil fields, he MROMI of our financial system has been steadily declining for over 50 years. Worse still, here is a chart showing that the system has hit "zero hour"..."

"What does this mean - on a pragmatic level - for the typcial LATOC reader? Well pretty much the usual which is the system is going down and so you should be doing whatever you can realistically do to prepare for major breakdowns in globalized systems of finance and food. If you want to discuss the "monetary flat spin" that we've entered, check out the discussion going on about it right now at the LATOC Forum and the original one over at the Ticker Forum."

What are precursors to Yellowstone eruption?

In all the interviews with geologists regarding the Yellowstone situation, they always describe several indicators that the magma chamber may be rising. Precursors have been described as earthquake swarms, harmonic tremors, hydrothermal changes (geysers going off at different times or new geysers), lake bottom building or rising, to name the strongest indicators. Of course, they do remind us that they don't really know, because humans have not been around long enough to track supervolcanic eruptions, and these indicators could just as easily mean the restless giant is only yawning and may go back to sleep.

So far at Yellowstone there have been swarms, harmonic tremors, hydrothermal changes, and also ground swell.

"The Yellowstone “supervolcano” rose at a record rate since mid-2004, likely because a Los Angeles-sized, pancake-shaped blob of molten rock was injected 6 miles beneath the slumbering giant, University of Utah scientists report in the journal Science." Source

"The upward movement of the Yellowstone caldera floor – almost 3 inches (7 centimeters) per year for the past three years – is more than three times greater than ever observed since such measurements began in 1923, says the study in the Nov. 9 issue of Science by seismologist Robert B. Smith, geophysics postdoctoral associate Wu-Lung Chang and colleagues."

""Our best evidence is that the crustal magma chamber is filling with molten rock," Smith says. "But we have no idea how long this process goes on before there either is an eruption or the inflow of molten rock stops and the caldera deflates again," he adds."

Now we have this, above. A recent graph from USGS illustrating discharge cubic feet per second from Yellowstone Lake.

The trend upward from the past 79 years of historical data started at the same time as the swarm of quakes underneath the lake. The triangles on the graph indicate the average for the date over the years. Why is there more water pouring out of Lake Yellowstone? Some say melting snow. The problem is the temp there has been in the 20's.
The lake bed rising would be one explanation. Click chart to enlarge, source data here

Alternately, and more likely, may be a pending hydrothermal explosion in which underground water encounters a hot spot and blasts through the surface. Small hydrothermal explosions producing craters a few feet wide occur in Yellowstone perhaps once or twice a year. Large hydrothermal explosions leaving craters the size of a football field occur every 200 years or so, according to a 2007 paper co-authored by Heasler, Lowenstern and others, says this news article.

Whatever is going on there...is still going on. What it adds up to is anybody's guess..including the geologists.

Yellowstone: nowhere to hide

Dr. Michael Rampino, a Vulcanologist from NYU, was interviewed by Fox News on January 7th. I can't embed the video because they turned that off but you can click the link and watch it at their site. Here are a few of the statements. The clip is interesting, lengthy for a tv news spot, and has a lot of graphics shown while the Doctor is talking:

Interviewer: "What do you see in all these small earthquakes that have occurred since the day after Christmas?"

Doctor: "It made us all sit up and take notice that something is going on at Yellowstone. It is a restless volcano, most people don't know that when they go to the park they are inside the cauldron of a supervolcano that has erupted many times in the past..."

Interviewer: "Is this realistic, or are we just scaring people out there? I mean, people are writing in, thinking this is Armageddon..."

Doctor: "The probability that this will occur at any particular year is very small but we know it has happened in the past and we know that Yellowstone tends goes off on these large supervolcanic eruptions..."

Doctor: "We may be seeing the magma chamber doing things in preparation for a large eruption, or we may be seeing presagings of a small eruption, or we may just be seeing restless magma chamber moving around and things will go back to normal and we won't see an eruption for thousands of years."

Interviewer: "Old Faithful: not so faithful any more...is that a suggestion of what's happening below the earth's surface?"

Doctor: "We look for any changes. We see the ground bulging up, we see geysers going off at different times, we see earthquakes below the volcano...all these may indicate a lessening of stress on the volcano, or it may indicate the stress inside the volcano is getting greater. We really don't know enough about the precursors of a large volcanic eruption to make any kind of a reasonable prediction about what might happen at Yellowstone."

graphical interlude: 1,000-3,000 eqs per year at Yellowstone, in one week there have been 500+

Interviewer: "Doctor is this the kind of thing that keeps you up at night?"

Doctor: "It doesn't keep me up at night but it certainly keeps me thinking about what sort of major disaster may be hitting us from left field. We are not prepared for the global environmental effects that could affect the climate, for example..."

The upshot is that there would be nowhere to hide. Except in Jesus' saving grace and knowledge that life in Him is eternal. The Yellowstone incident has shaken the world, and caused more than a few to understand that self-sufficiency is illusory. God is in control, and with Jesus as savior there is nothing to fear. Ever.

Letting your love flow...toward the Bellamy Brothers

Who knew? The Bellamy Brothers, have produced 49 albums! Their career spans thirty years. Who are the Bellamy Brothers you may ask?

"Just let your love flow" is their signature song, and their resurgence (at least for a new generation) is due to the OK Barclay's Bank ad below.

They have published another CD, titled Jesus Is Coming, a full length gospel album offering a mixture of gospel, blues, and country. They are busy, and actually they sound better than ever. I loved that song when it came out. I was 15 and what does a 15 year old girl think about? Luv.

Ahhh, Hummin' and struttin' thirty three years ago. Man, where does the time go? Well, let your love flow...

Yellowstone: Small swarm on January 9

Small Earthquake Swarm on 9 January 2009 near northeast corner of Yellowstone Caldera

"A currently modest swarm of earthquakes began in the northeast corner of the Yellowstone Caldera, about 10 miles (16 km) NNE of the north end of the Yellowstone Lake swarm that was active in late December and early January. As of 1930 MST, 10 earthquakes had been located by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, the largest with M= 3.3 and two other events with M >2.0. Located depths are between 2 and 4 km."

"Yellowstone Volcano Observatory staff and collaborators are analyzing the data from this and from the earlier Yellowstone Lake swarm and are checking for any changes to the thermal areas located near the epicenters. We will provide further information as it becomes available."

Yuh-huh.

Islam: "It's Our Time" because of...Obama

A certain headline is making the rounds today.

Christians have strongly suspected the President-Elect is not a real Christian but a Muslim. There are good reasons for thinking this. He "converted" to Christianity at the same time he decided to enter American politics. He totes a bible but refutes what's in it. Again. And again. He was adopted by a Muslim man and attended Muslim school, enrolled as a Muslim. He even referred to himself as a Muslim. By accident of course. (By the way, a true follower of Jesus NEVER confuses who or what he worships).

Anyway, is it bad, or good, to talk with Hamas?

It's bad!
One of Barack Obama’s Middle East policy advisers disclosed yesterday that he had held meetings with the militant Palestinian group Hamas – prompting the likely Democratic nominee to sever all links with him.

It's good!
Huffington Post: January 9, 2009: Obama camp prepared to talk to Hamas...

It's bad!
Jerusalem Post, January 10, 2009: Obama won't deal with Hamas, 'Post' told
Obama Draws Line On Negotiations, Won't Talk To Hamas

It's good!
"Strong countries and strong presidents meet and talk with our adversaries," Obama said at an Aug. 19 debate. "We shouldn't be afraid to do so. We've tried the other way. It didn't work."

The Muslims know...it's VERY VERY good that Obama will be US President. They are so happy. Here is the headline making the rounds:

On Obama's inauguration, Muslims say, 'It's our time'.

Why do they know it's their time?

Muslims know: Obama funded foreign thug who promised Islamic state.

Muslims know: Malik Obama confirms his half-brother Barack grew up a Muslim

Muslims know: Islamica Magazine says "Obama's Muslim supporters continue to work for a candidate who cannot afford to wink back at them. Given his perceived "closeness" to Islam, and the fact that he shares a name with a former Iraqi dictator, it could be strategic suicide for the Obama campaign to vocally acknowledge organized Muslim support. At a time when endorsements are worn like badges of honor, no major candidate is looking for the Muslim vote."

Well...
Christians know: Christianity of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the true religion and Ishmael is the usurper. It is ordained: He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone's hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers." (Gen. 16:12)

Christians know: Abraham pleaded Ishmael’s case before God, but was told that the everlasting covenant would be with Isaac and his descendants (Gen. 17:19).

Christians know: Ishmael would beget 12 princes and would be made into a great nation (Gen. 17:20) – the Arab nation.

Christians know: “They say, ‘Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!’ "(Psalm 83:4-8)

Christians know: Though many Muslims try to live holy lives, at its root, Islam is evil. (Left, Muslims bury a woman to her waist in preparation for her stoning death)

Christians know that Christianity is love: "But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more." (John 8:7-11)

It may or may not be "the Muslims' time." Christians know that this is a concern, but ultimately, and someday forever, it will be our time.

After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: "Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, 2for true and just are his judgments. He has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth by her adulteries. He has avenged on her the blood of his servants." 3And again they shouted: "Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever." 6" The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:
"Amen, Hallelujah!"
Then a voice came from the throne, saying:
"Praise our God,
all you his servants,
you who fear him,
both small and great!"

6Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: "Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. 7Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!
