A question posed in a chat room asked our favorite tv show theme songs. Now, the internet is great, because lately I have reviewed the delegate calculator, studied particle physics, news from around the globe, quake swarms, the difference between a regular volcano, supervolcano, and a caldera volcano, and all sorts of other science and natural topics.
But the internet is great also, because when someone asks me my favorite tv show theme, I can go to right away to YouTube and listen to The Beverly Hillbillies, The Brady Bunch, and Gilligan's Island theme songs before deciding. Ahhh, I am a baby boomer fer sure. I also voted for Miami Vice and The Sopranos.
Did you know there were several versions of the Beverly Hillbillies and Gilligan's Island theme songs? I listened to them all. Originally, the Gilligan's Island song ended by saying, "...and the rest... here on Gilligan's Isle!" But later versions added "The Professor and MaryAnne, here on Gilligan's Isle." There are several references and video clips that show the unaired pilot episode with the theme song having a calypso beat and having horrendous lyrics...It's pretty bad, I can't believe that the lyrics would ever have been allowed on tv. Heh, maybe that is why it never saw the light of day!! Double click on the YouTube clip to go to the page and read the insider comments about why this particular version never made it, and the scuffle to even get this show on the air.
I also didn't know that originally Gilligan's Island was in black and white. For The Beverly Hillbillies, there was originally an acoustic version of the theme song, they added the famous lyrics later.
Who can forget these songs? I think these songs can stand as successful because even though the shows themselves have gone away, it's been almost 40 years since its last airing of the Hillbillies and over 40 for Gilligan and we can still sing the lyrics.
That is why The Simpsons is so brilliant. It first aired nineteen years ago, but as cartoon characters, they never change!
