Ocean emotion

I'm missing the ocean this summer so here you go, another shot from the Lubec Maine harbor. Dinghy at rest.

Maine looks really beautiful. I've always had this hankering to visit there. What time of your would you recommend going? And where should an out-of-towner stay to get a good sense of what Maine life is like?

I recommend the hardest place to get to, Downeast Maine between Machias and Eastport. It is virtually untouched from 1950 in terms of prices and wildness. So MANY opportunities for wildlife photos, wild trips kayaking, boating, or hiking. Lots of great campgrounds of B&Bs. I used to love Eastport on the 4th of July, a large parade with 8000 attending and always a US Na y ship in port. ANd cool, never hot with being on the water and the fog. Only US whilrpool there. Whales, seals, eagles...

Fly into Bangor, rent a car and have a traffic-less two hour drive to Eastport. Google "Downeast Maine" for tourism info. I used to rent a cottage with full kitchen and cable, on dead end rd only house there, on the cove all to myself, for $400 week. Watched the fishing small fleet leave, come back every day on the highest tides in US. Can't be beat.

If that is too far or remote, fly into Portland and stay anywhere between Portland and Rockland, that is Midcoast Maine (as opposed to Downeast.
