Lexington KY Principal Gerry Brooks is one hysterical guy. He makes short Youtube/Facebook videos recounting life in a school, and his charming and funny look at school life never fails to hit the funny bone. But this one, THIS clip, got me laughing so hard I watched it three times, holding my belly and wiping tears.
It is the end of our second week of school. I no longer have kindergarten lunchroom duty but I did do it for years. I also to this day work with kindergarteners. I'd been laughing over the funny and random things they say, like today I'd recounted a random kindergartener comment and the other day, a random kindergartener grandma comment. It happens just like Gerry said.
And yes, the Pizza Lunchable is a nightmare. It is for me because I want to be sure and get TO all the kids in time to open all their things so they can have a relaxing lunch with enough time to eat it, AND for the child, who manages never to get the circle holding the sauce and the cheese to their mouth before the cheese falls off and the sauce drips on their inevitably new pants/dress/sweater... And you don't forget their little face of total disappointment when they're tearfully staring at an upside down plopped circle on the floor with tomato sauce splatter radiating out from all around it.
Watch this and laugh.
By the way, the stress eases up after a few months. It's so cute to see the little guys being more independent and eating and talking and being their silly ol' selves. :)

School starts Monday
My cat does this. I always thought it was just him, but apparently not, lol
My new cat Murray is coming along swimmingly. This summer since I've been home, he as taken to seeking me out for company. He will sit or lay at my feet, request grooming and actually purr, or bump noses with me as a hello. This is wonderful progress since for the last year since I brought him inside as a stray, he has pretty much fled whenever I even looked in his direction.
I found another television show that I really like. As I've mentioned many times, it's hard to find one that is interesting, clean, well-written, etc. And more often than not when I do find one, there was only one season of it. See Terriers (2010), Firefly (2002), Enlisted (2014), sadly, so many others.
The show I found on Netflix is "The Finder." It got one season in 2012. The premise is "An Iraq war vet suffers a brain injury that triggers the ability to see connections between seemingly unrelated events, objects or people." The setting is Key West so it would seem we can call this one a "blue skies" show. I have seen two episodes and there is an undercurrent of Christianity running through, something that others have noticed as well. Probably why it got only one season.
Ha ha now that I am looking at the cast and crew for both Enlisted (2014) and The Finder (2012) I see that the lead male character in both shows is Jeff Stults. Coincidence? I think not.
I still miss Terriers and I love Donal Logue. What a great show Terriers was.
As for Firefly, well all that's been hashed over so much. We've been mourning it for 15 years now. I notice that when Firefly was canceled its lead Nathan Fillion was depressed for a long time, heartbroken he said. When Terriers was canceled Logue became a truck driver he was so heartbroken and disgusted with how shows are made and kept and canceled. Coincidence? I think not.
I found Castle online. Yes I know it has beenon for 7 years. It really does take me a long time to wake up to things. Its lead is the aforementioned Firefly lead, Nathan Fillion. I've been watching this summer. I like all the Firefly references in Castle. They're great insider jokes.
I like TV shows, when they're good. (Sea Patrol). I like bingeing on them when they're really good. (Sea Patrol). But all that is coming to an end. Monday I go back to work. This year they have bumped back the starting bell for parapro's day to 7:10, so I will have to leave home at 6:55 latest. Early.
We have a three-and-a-half hour convocation starting at 8:00 Monday, and then after break for lunch I'll be in my shared classroom setting my section of it up. I'm anxious to see the schedule, how my day will go and into which classrooms I'll be sent to support the teacher. And which groups of kids I'll be taking out for small group or tutoring work. I know already that in addition to Kindergarten I'll be used in first grade and second grade. It's a busy day for sure, but good days, because they involve kids!
I will miss my afternoon naps though, my studies, and my kitties. All good things come to an end, while other good things come in to take their place. In my case, fulfilling and enjoyable employment.

There's No Tired like End-of-the-year-Teacher tired
There's a thing going around Facebook. It is a quote on top of a cartoon of an exhausted teacher and the quote says,
"There's no tired like end-of-the-year teacher tired."
Yes, except there is no tired also like end-of-the-year para-pro tired, too.
We have so many end of the year activities, end of the year assessments, end of the year deadlines, it's bewildering.
Today we had a party outside sponsored by the Library at school. The school librarian, her parapro, and other staff associated with them held a reward party for accelerated readers. All those children who earned a certain amount of points in a reading program were treated to an end-of-the-year party. This party, which was held outdoors, included amplified music, Popsicles, and a fire truck spraying water! The kids were told ahead of time and wore their bathing suits to school. Release 120 kids on the soccer field to run around, dance, do cartwheels, chase each other, and play under the fire hose, all under breezy, cloudless, 80 degree skies, and well, you have the perfect recipe for fun under the sun. You never heard so much kid laughter.
For me it was exhausting, it was hot, but it was absolutely wonderful to see so many happy kids playing outside, all because of their success in reading and being rewarded for their efforts!
I was pretty beat when I left school. But it is Thursday and if it is Thursday I must grocery shop. I must. Luckily the Dollar Store and Grocery Store are only 1 mile from school so I drove down and noticed the new striping when I approached the stores' parking lot. The two stores are adjacent to each other. I am glad the parking lot was re-striped. It was getting kind of like a free for all there with cars parked every which way. I like things to be organized. So I was happy with the new striping alerting one and all as to where they should park. Organizing the world one parking lot at a time.
In the Dollar Store, which was mercifully quiet, I was bleary and not making good decisions. Or maybe they were excellent decisions. In addition to my other groceries, unusually I ended up with a bag of popcorn, a bag of chips, and a bag of potato sticks. Clearly salty and crunchy is my comfort food.
I came home and made an open faced tuna & grapes sandwich, spilled out some chips, and drank chilled hibiscus tea mixed with fizzy club soda. I had a piece of blackberry pie with Cool Whip for dessert. Ahhh, home and peace and quiet. But mostly sitting down. I was sitting down. That's my goal in life now. Not being President. Not winning the Pulitzer. Not finding a cure for cancer. Just sitting.
Now to make it through Friday, then the next 4.5 days at school with the kids, and the next 5 days after that. Then I'm sprung. For now, I'll watch Bosch on Amazon streaming, have a glass of milk, pet my cat, and soon after, fall asleep.
Zzzzzz....

School starts tomorrow, have to go to bed earlier
We have a three-day kindercamp. For incoming new students enrolled in our kindergarten, we have a pre-beginning-of-school opportunity for the kids to come and have three days of a mini-day. For three hours, they go through a regular day. They learn the classroom, where the bathroom is, lunchroom, practice recess, go through rotations for centers...
So that when the first day rolls around on August 15, they are ready and know what is ahead for them. it helps the kids tremendously and it calms the parent's anxiety too. It's really good.
This year I am working at it. So tomorrow I'll be working and that means I should get to bed.
As I've brought Murray in, and he has grown, he has shown me he's a smart cookie. He is also relentless in discovering things. For example, he found a bobby pin. I've lived here 6 years and I assure you I vacuum. I don't wear bobby pins. The tenant before me was a man and he didn't wear bobby pins either. So Murray found one and he plays with it. OK, good for you Murray. I won't dwell on the mystery.
He likes to eat the flowers in the bud base in the kitchen window. He slaps the pictures hanging over the back of the couch. He tosses the stack of books that are on the coffee table, off the coffee table. He strips away at the paper on the magazine spines. He likes to pick at the strip of wood lining the bottom of the tub where it meets the floor. He shreds the toilet paper. I have to hang that on a bungee cord higher than he can reach. But sometimes in the summer I use the bungee for the front door (don't ask) so when I do I have to put the TP somewhere high and out of reach AND remember where it is before I sit down in the morning! He sits on the desk and smacks that picture too, sometimes bouncing it off the wall.
I leave lots of kitty toys around on the floor, it's not like he's deprived. He and the other cats can go anywhere in the entire apartment, except the kitchen counter. They have latitude. It's just that Murray is a kitty. I hope he grows out of some of this.
So this means my going to bed routine has lengthened. I have to start in the kitchen; put the flowers in the fridge. In the living room I line the back of the couch with the pillows that are normally on the couch. I put a heavier book atop the stack of smaller books so he can't fling them off. I let him eat the paper on the magazines. Kitty's gotta have fun. I put the 20lb kitty litter bucket next to the strip of wood he likes to pick at. He is not big enough to move the heavy bucket. Yet. But he tries. I fix the TP so he can't get it. In the bedroom I put more pillows as a barricade against the picture over the desk.
I do all this while I sing A Chorus Line's "What I Did For Love"

Back to school
Well, we've had a week off. Last Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday we were under the Sheriff's urging to "stay put" Snowmageddon snow storm. We had three snow days from school because we received about 7 inches of snow over the time period, ice, sleet and wind. By the time the weather cleared, Friday and today were an already scheduled winter break. So it's been a week off!
Only the Superintendent and School Board know how we'll make up the 3 days. They'll let us know when they decide. Meanwhile, tomorrow starts the hamster wheel again. Back to school!
Speaking of hamster wheel, I found a neat hamster ball online that had a kitty in it. I might get one for Murray. Of course I'd get a larger one than this one in the link, if it is available.
The weather has been sunny and warm. Today it is 57 degrees and tomorrow it will be in the mid-60s. What I love about Georgia is not just the temps, but the sun's warmth is actually warmer and stronger, earlier in the season. When you go outside and if you're protected from the wind, it is actually warm. The sun rays feel so gooood!
Breakfast today was farm fresh egg w/roasted green peppers, mushroom, tomato. Home fries, kiwi & tangerine salad. Most food from Bountiful Basket :)
Lunch was also from the goodies from Bountiful Basket: leek & potato soup, spinach salad with a boiled egg, croutons and avocado. I love the quality of the produce from BB and the plentifulness of it.
I filled the bird feeder and the birds have been loving it. Especially the chickadees. The birds are back in force, and I hear their concert every dawn and evening. The morning birdsong is very rousing around here.

First day of school
The first day of school 2013-2014 is here and I had a fantastic day! The kids were adorable as usual. Everything went smoothly. For the first time in years, it wasn't hot. The temps today were only about 72 degrees for a high, which is thirty degrees lower than last year's start of the year on the first day. Last year was monstrously hot. The buses don't have air conditioning and after sitting in the lot all day they were so hot you could grow jungle orchids in there. We passed out water to the kids getting on and were advising them to sip slowly during the ride. Man, it was hot.
Anyway, today for the first time it wasn't only cool, but it rained. The veteran teachers local to the area said that they can't remember the last time it rained on the first day. I didn't mind it, though I was sad the kids could not go out and play, but usually it is too hot for that anyway on the first day. The cool air and rainy, dark landscape made for a relaxing, quiet time.
It was sweet to see the first graders in the lunch room. I work in kindergarten all day but I have a midday duty that monitors 1st graders. Anyway when they sat down at the tables with their class and then looked up and around, they spotted their former classmates scattered around the cafeteria eating with their new classmates. They raised their hand and asked to go hug that one, or speak to this one, and their little reunions were totally charming. One guy who was popular last year in kindergarten but moved away, has come back. When his former classmates saw him, the news spread like wildfire around all the tables. "He's back, look!" they all said, and many hugs were exchanged. They might have short attention spans and can't remember a lot, but they do make heart-felt friends who mean a great deal to them. Even if it is short term, they love deeply.
My ole car performed like a champ all summer. On the day before the first day and on the first day with kids, of course it broke down. I hate that. I really, really hate that. There is only one place I have to be in my whole life, and it is school. I can walk or bike to church, to the PO and to the grocery store. They are all within half a mile. The school is a must-get-to destination, and of course that is the place it decides to strand me. I hate that. I can't tell you how much.
So Saturday is another Bountiful Baskets pick up. I am so thrilled with the produce. For a vegetarian like me, that basket is like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Quality produce at affordable prices, it is heaven! I can't wait to see what is in my basket. I still have half a cantaloupe left over and half a cabbage. It does take me a good two weeks to eat it all.
A friend had given me a bag of green beans, and I'm going to make green bean pate with some and green bean casserole with the rest. And then I'll wait to see what is in my basket for this week to plan the rest.
I was looking at my Italy photos over the weekend. The last time I went was 1998, fifteen years ago. It seems like a lifetime ago. My sister and family is in France now. My France trip was even longer ago than Italy. Back then, I was consumed with where the next place I was going to go, so as to experience the bigness of life. Now I'm consumed with the minutiae of life- groceries, work, vehicle, church, writing, and my cats. Back then I saw God's plan in the vastness of His creation. From the towering Alps, to the Amazon valleys, to the blue Mediterranean to the hills of Scotland, from the icebergs at Labrador to the crystal Bahamian sea, it was vast in scope but empty of importance.
Now I see God in the details of my life instead of the vastness. My life is about minutiae but it's not minute. It's small but not trifling. It's where He planted me to do kingdom work, so therefore it is important. Though it is a quiet life, it is a big life- because of the work He gave me to do. And the work is to love, rejoice, and be glad in this day, because He has made it.

School tomorrow
Tomorrow I go back to school. We have four days of meetings, pre-planning and setting up rooms and then Friday the kids come back. The yellow school buses will roll out once again, and again and again, for the next 180 days. Or so.
Every year it's different- my daily tasks as a special education para-professional are to meet the needs of the children in the program who have been identified as needing such and such for so many minutes per day. Which kids I support, in which classrooms I support them, and how that support is meted out depends on the needs of each child who comes in. So year to year it changes. I'll know more when I go to school this week and all the regular education and special education kindergarten teachers hash out the schedule and then they will hand it to me and I'm good to go.
Seeing as how I am going to rise with the sun for the first time since May 30th...here are a few photos to remind me of what the world looks like at that time.

Time for another haircut
Well the hot weather is here to stay a while. It is the heat AND the humidity, for sure. Mostly I stay in and write and read and do a bit of cooking. My cats love snuggling with me. They'll be shocked in August when I go back to school and am gone for 9 hours a day!
Bert has taken to snoozing under the chair I sit in at the kitchen table where I write on my laptop. Luke likes to sleep on the table across from me. Neither of them ask for much, just to be near me. They are good cats. I think the world of them.
On Youtube, my "YesterYearTVShows" channel, they just uploaded a bunch from 1950s, the old show What's My Line. These professions must have been hard to guess!

My hair has turned me into Medusa again, it's time for a cut. Tomorrow when I go to the PO to retrieve my printer ink and send some letters, I'll wander over to Wilda's and see if she can give me a quick cut. I hate the feel of it on my neck. Drives me nuts.
On Youtube I have been watching the early seasons of the 70s show Taxi. That was a hilarious show. I laughed so hard...I think it's funnier than Cheers and really good Frasiers, two other really funny shows. Like belly laughs, the kind that make your whole face scrunch up.
I saw a movie called "The Next Voice You Hear..." starring James Whitmore and Nancy Davis (Reagan) which was good.
What am I going to do when work intrudes on my busy schedule? Well, at least school starts a week or so later this year. Instead of August 1 the kids will come back around August 16. Or sometime. I'll look at the calendar to be sure when it gets closer. Meanwhile, this is going around on Facebook-
Yeah.

School's out for summer!
Callin' out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancin' in the streets
It was a very good school year, and now it is over. Oh, to be sure, teachers and staff have two more days next week to come in and pack up, but the kids are done and gone. It's over. It was an excellent school year and I'm grateful to have a job, I'm happy to have THIS job in particular. I love working with students, and to have the blessed time off during the summer to read, study, and regroup. All is good.
